Epictetus to an Athlete — “Don’t show me your books, and don’t show me your gigantic weights, show me your shoulders!”

4th Toastmasters Meeting

Friday I went to another Toastmaster’s club.

It took place at a table at a lounge. I had a chef’s salad. It was excellent.

The meeting was tough to judge because ¾ of it was taken up with club business such as training new executive members: The Treasurer’s responsibilities are x, y, and z. Etc.

The one prepared speech was fun to see and listen to.

The impromptu table topic speeches were a blur. I stood up, gave a one minute thirty second speech and whatever my alleged topic was when I started, it bore little resemblance to how I finished. I forgot is an understatement!

Which is to say speaking off the cuff in public while trying to be funny without “pre-inspiration” as it were, or something which just struck you, is a real challenge. Therefore, I accepted the club’s invitation to join them again as a guest at their next meeting.

This club meets once a month.

  1. These posts have finally tipped me over the edge. As a sales trainer speaking in groups has been an ongoing and lifelong passion. While I feel I am pretty good, this is a way to see how much better I can get.

Your stories are great and your honesty is refreshing. Keep them coming.

  2. Thanks, Karl! Since I am a new salesperson for a technology company, this is inspiring. I’m glad you benefited and I hope you don’t mind that I’m going to take your comment and use it as motivation to do more “getting off my @ss” than I’ve been doing!
