The list goes on and on. Rarely if ever was a more true article written than this by cardiologist, Dr. William Davis:

“This Is Your Brain on Wheat”

Epicurus and Epictetus (or Why I’d Like to Name a Son “Epic”)

On the topic of happiness, here’s what second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

… for what is now the most powerful economy in the world had to say about it.

What a beautiful sentiment, however imperfectly realized. That a nation is founded on the principle of its people being safe and free to pursue happiness for themselves, families, and friends.

The man who wrote that was American founder and former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson.

From Jefferson’s letter to William Short:

“As you say of yourself, I TOO AM AN EPICUREAN. I consider the genuine doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us. Epictetus, indeed, has given us what was good of the Stoics.”

These 2 philosophers came up with different ideas on how to achieve happiness in this life. Both have been influential on my thinking and, yes, attitude.

Wheat, Arthritis, Mood, and even Complexion

It made sense to me.

A lot of sense.

Many of the symptoms on this list get quickly better for me with just a couple days off wheat. And a couple days on wheat makes them worse.

Improved rheumatoid arthritis — I have seen this time and time again. Eliminate wheat and the painful thumbs, fingers, and other joints clear up dramatically. Many former rheumatoid sufferers people tell me that one cracker or pretzel will trigger a painful throbbing reminder that lasts a couple of hours.

Reduction or elimination of gastroesophageal reflux

Better mood — Eliminating wheat makes you happier and experience more stable moods. Just as wheat is responsible for a subset of schizophrenia and bipolar illness (this is fact), and wheat elimination generates dramatic improvement, when you or I eliminate wheat, we also experience a “smoothing” of mood swings.

Better complexion — I’m not entirely sure why, but various rashes will often dissipate, bags under the eyes are reduced, itching in funny places stops.

Make sure you study the points I’ve missed. I believe, based both on the available evidence and my personal experience, this will help you.

“Making Jacqui Happy”

A thought came to me.

The same thought had come to me several times lately. I have no power to make another happy.

I am not happy all the time. I’m happy more now than I used to be, and that’s because of steps I’ve taken — fitfully and occasionally — to make it so. Outside of myself I have only the power to love another. Whether this is enough to make the other person happy or if they need to take additional steps is up to them. I recommend the latter.

Then it occurred to me tonight why I named this site, “Loving Jacqui” and not “Making Jacqui Happy”.

‘Cause I do love her even on those days I don’t “make” her happy. I love her even on those days “I make” her feel bad.

Science of True Love

Jacqui asks if I’ll still love her when she gets to Canada.

Well it is scientifically possible:

SCIENTISTS have discovered true love. Brain scans have proved that a small number of couples can respond with as much passion after 20 years as most people exhibit only in the first flush of love….

It goes on to list several famous and less than famous people who have kept their love alive. It’s a great list. To that list, I would ad 2:

Jacqui’s grandparents.
